Bridging the Gap: How Esperity Is Using Technology to Empower Patients in Rural Belgium

In a country with a well-developed healthcare system such as Belgium, it is easy to assume that access to care is universal. However, for many older adults living in rural areas, navigating the healthcare system can still be challenging — especially when it comes to accessing timely, coordinated, and personalized support.

At Esperity, we believe every patient deserves more than access — they deserve empowerment. That’s why we’re launching a new initiative aimed at understanding and addressing the real barriers to care for elderly populations in rural parts of Belgium.

Through this project, we will work closely with our partners Z-Plus and Innovation Sprint to design and implement a pilot that doesn’t just treat symptoms of inequality — but tackles the root causes.

Listening First: A Survey to Map the Gaps

The first step in our mission? Listening to those most affected. Esperity will lead a national survey to better understand the lived experiences of older adults in rural communities — how they access care (or don’t), what stands in their way, and what kind of support they wish they had.

The objective is not simply to collect data, but to build a strong foundation for targeted action. Only by identifying these unmet needs can we begin to translate them into real, implementable solutions that matter.

From Insight to Action: AI-Enabled Support Systems

With the survey insights in hand, the next step is to explore how AI-enabled technology can help close the gaps.

  • Z-Plus will bring its expertise in nurse-driven patient monitoring and alarm management systems — ensuring that patients can be followed up proactively and securely from home.
  • Innovation Sprint, through its Healthentia app, will facilitate remote health data collection and patient-reported outcomes, giving a clearer picture of daily wellbeing.
  • Esperity will focus on what we do best: educating and empowering patients through personalized content and support tools tailored to individual health and digital literacy levels.

Whether through simple videos explaining a new monitoring device, sending medication reminders in a patient’s preferred language, or helping someone understand how their condition is progressing — we ensure that technology never feels intimidating or out of reach.

Empowerment Is the Missing Link

What makes Esperity different is our unwavering focus on human-centered innovation. Technology is only as good as the people it serves — and for us, that means designing with empathy, accessibility, and co-creation at the core.

With over a decade of experience working on digital engagement strategies in underserved populations — from oncology patients to chronic disease communities — we know that health education and digital onboarding are often the missing links between potential and impact.

We don’t just deploy tools. We help people feel confident using them, understand why they matter, and know what to do next.

Collaborating Across the Ecosystem

Tackling access issues requires more than isolated apps or devices. It requires collaboration across the entire health ecosystem — from nurses and local caregivers to municipalities, policy makers, and tech developers.

That’s why this project isn’t just a pilot. It’s a blueprint for how multi-stakeholder partnerships can generate sustainable, system-level change.

We’re proud to take a leadership role in bringing this pilot to life, and even prouder to do it with and for the people who need it most.

What’s Next?

In the coming months, we’ll be:

  • Conducting the national survey
  • Sharing initial insights on access challenges
  • Co-designing the pilot with our partners and local communities
  • Measuring real-world outcomes of AI-enhanced care solutions in rural Belgium

If you’re a healthcare professional, patient organization, policymaker, or caregiver and want to get involved — we’d love to hear from you.

Because access is only the beginning. Empowerment is the goal.

Together, we aim to contribute to more accessible and inclusive healthcare services for rural communities.
