Technology as a Vehicle for Social Value Creation

When we talk about technology today, the conversation often revolves around speed, efficiency, and the newest shiny innovation. But what if we shifted the focus? What if technology became less about “what’s possible” and more about “what’s meaningful”?

Within the EVOSST project, that’s exactly the mindset guiding our work. We’re exploring how advanced tools like artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) can genuinely improve people’s lives—especially those who are too often left out of the digital transformation.

A Different Approach to Innovation

Instead of treating technology as the goal, we see it as a means to create well-being, inclusion, and equal access to opportunity. This aligns closely with the principles of a well-being economy, where success isn’t measured only by growth, but by how secure, connected, and empowered people feel. The real question we ask is:

How can technology help people thrive—not just survive?

This lens shapes everything we develop, from healthcare tools to inclusive learning platforms.

Four Pilots, One Vision: Technology That Serves People

Across the project, we’re running four pilot scenarios. Each addresses a different social challenge, but all share the same intention: making advanced technology accessible, equitable, and humane.

1. Bringing Healthcare to Rural Communities

For older adults and people living far from medical centers, accessing healthcare can mean long trips and heavy burdens. Our first pilot introduces an AI-enabled telemedicine platform that makes remote consultations easier, more engaging, and more supportive—without requiring people to leave their communities.

2. Reskilling Workers in Regions Moving Beyond Coal

In former coal regions, many workers face uncertainty as industries transform. Using immersive VR learning environments, this pilot helps adults build new skills for the green and digital economy. It’s about opening doors to new careers and empowering communities in transition.

3. Supporting Adults on the Autism Spectrum in Inclusive Learning

Education isn’t one-size-fits-all. This scenario provides adults on the autism spectrum with personalized learning paths through an AI-adaptive platform. By co-designing it with educators and users, the goal is to ensure the experience is supportive, engaging, and respectful of different needs.

4. Making Social Services Accessible in Multicultural Urban Areas

Navigating social services can be overwhelming—especially for migrants dealing with language and cultural barriers. Our multilingual, culturally sensitive chatbot offers 24/7 support, helping people find essential services and reducing the pressure on frontline workers.

Why This Matters for Society

Technology has enormous potential, but inequities in health, education, employment, and social participation persist. These gaps don’t just affect individuals—they weaken social resilience.

By designing technology intentionally and responsibly, we can:

  • Expand access to essential services
  • Support vulnerable groups
  • Build stronger, more connected communities
  • Empower people to participate fully in society

Meaningful Innovation, Not Just More Innovation

One of the key lessons from our work is simple: technology doesn’t create impact by default. Impact comes from thoughtful design, real-world testing, and a commitment to equity. When tools are built with people’s needs at the center, technology becomes more than a product—it becomes a catalyst for positive change.

Through EVOSST project, we hope to contribute to a future where innovation lifts everyone, not just a few. A future where digital solutions support well-being, inclusion, and opportunity for all.
